How To Prepare For Divorce Mediation Without A Lawyer
October 29, 2020
Many people work their way through the divorce process without hiring a lawyer. If this is the approach you are taking, here are some tips for proceeding with divorce mediation without a lawyer.
It is important to understand that, while your mediator may be a lawyer, your mediator is not giving legal advice to either party in the mediation. If you need legal advice either before the mediation or after mediation to finalize the settlement agreement, you may want to at least hire your own lawyer for these limited purposes.
Come to mediation prepared. Bring all helpful family and financial documentation. Mediator Connect’s mediation checklist can be a great help here.
Participate in the mediation fully and in good faith. Take a constructive attitude and allow the mediator’s process to work in the way the mediator intends.
Understand your main objectives and make sure to focus on what you want to achieve in the mediation. It is a negotiation and you are not likely to get everything you want, but make sure to have your own priorities clear in your own mind.
While divorce mediation may be stressful, a successful mediation will eliminate all of the extra costs and additional stress of going to court to finalize your divorce.
Make sure you are prepared for mediation in order to maximize your chances of success.
